Dr. Carolyn Mayfield is an outstanding example of courage, resilience, grace, and savvy. She continues to enjoy her retired life and was recently honored by Paul D. Camp Community College with the title of Professor Emeritus. In 1989, she obtained her doctoral degree from William & Mary while also raising three children (2 of whom also have doctorates). Her drive and fortitude have served her well in her personal life and career.
Dr. Mayfield started at Paul D. Camp Community College in the mid 90’s where she worked until her catastrophic stroke. She retired as an Associate Professor of English and as the advisor for the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. As an active civic worker in the greater Hampton Roads community, she is a community-based grant writer, book editor, and a professional writer; as Carolyn still relishes helping others share their stores.
Initiated through the Suffolk Alumnae Chapter in 1977, she served as president of the chapter from 1982-1984.
